I could count the amount of times I’ve driven to the airport on one hand in the past decade, and London Luton Airport is my new favourite to get to via train.
Having made the trip to Gatwick airport myself numerous times, I’ve recently found London Luton Airport to be just as easy using Thameslink. There is no comparison with driving and dealing with busy motorways, worrying about traffic and having to rely on airport parking.
Thanks to regular Thameslink services, combined with the fast Luton DART connection, travelling to London Luton Airport by rail is straightforward. In this guide, I'll explain everything you need to know, from which station serves the airport to ticket savings, and luggage advice.
Which train station serves London Luton Airport?

The railway station serving London Luton Airport is Luton Airport Parkway. It’s important to note that trains do not travel directly to the airport terminal itself. Instead, passengers travel to Luton Airport Parkway and then take the Luton DART, a dedicated automated shuttle service linking the station and terminal which takes less than four minutes and drops you at departures.
Expert tip: When booking tickets, book to ‘London Luton Airport’ rather than ‘Luton Airport Parkway’. This will include the DART transfer as part the ticket making the journey even simpler.
How the DART transfer works

It's easy to transfer from Luton Airport Parkway railway station into the airport itself. Once you arrive at Luton Airport Parkway station, simply follow the clearly marked signs to the DART platforms. The transfer is designed specifically for airport passengers.
You’ll have to go up a level, but there are lifts, escalators and step-free access throughout. The journey itself takes just under four minutes. DART services operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and run up to 14 services an hour at peak times.
Expert tip : When you book your ticket all the way to Luton Airport, your Railcard or GroupSave savings include the Luton DART too. Please note that discounts don’t apply if you buy the DART ticket separately.
Fastest trains from central London

One of the biggest advantages of travelling to London Luton Airport by train is the range of direct Thameslink services available from central London. Trains run directly from London St Pancras International, Farringdon, City Thameslink, London Blackfriars and London Bridge to Luton Airport Parkway. This makes Thameslink a particularly convenient option for both leisure and business travellers.
Journey times vary depending on your departure station and the service you choose, but trains from London St Pancras International can reach London Luton Airport (including the DART) in as little as 35 minutes, making rail one of the quickest and most reliable ways to reach the airport.
How early should you arrive?

While Thameslink services to London Luton Airport are frequent and reliable, it's always advised to allow additional time before your flight. Especially if you’re like me and you like to be the first one there.
Most airlines recommend arriving:
- At least two hours before short-haul flights
- Around three hours before long-haul flights
When travelling by train, I generally suggest arriving at the airport around 30 minutes earlier than your airline's recommendation. This extra buffer provides protection against unexpected service delays, busy ticket barriers or longer than usual airport queues. When flying during school holidays, bank holiday weekends or peak summer periods, it’s prudent to allow even more time.
Expert tip: Check your train's live departure information via the Thameslink app before leaving home and again while travelling. A quick check can help you react early if disruption occurs.
First and last train times
Thameslink services from central London either run through the night on a reduced service (such as from St Pancras International) or begin running during the early morning and finish very late in the evening (such as Farringdon). This is route specific, so it is highly recommended that you check and plan your route when organising your trip.
Can you use contactless or Oyster?

You can use contactless to get to London Luton Airport, but it has to be done in two separate steps. This means you can tap to get to Luton Airport Parkway and then tap again to use the Luton Dart to the airport terminal. It is not possible to use an Oyster card for either of these stations.
Expert tip: While contactless is incredible convenient, book your train tickets in advance. You can often save money this way with an Advance ticket. Remember to book to London Luton Airport to include the DART.
Travelling with luggage

Luggage is very straightforward on Thameslink services. They offer:
- Dedicated luggage storage areas for larger bags or pushchairs which are conveniently placed at the doorways
- Overhead luggage racks
- Wide doorways for easier boarding
The DART has also been designed specifically for air travellers and offers generous space for suitcases, cabin bags and pushchairs.
