Careers

Ready to help people get where they’re going? Or looking to put your technical skills to good use? Find out here about job opportunities at Thameslink

Govia Thameslink Railway was formed in 2015, combining four train operating companies - Southern, Gatwick Express, Thameslink and Great Northern - to carry out the biggest rail transformation in decades and create a modern railway that meets the needs of passengers today.

We employ more than 7000 people across the UK. Our HQ people are planners, project managers, people managers, skilled professionals and administrators from hundreds of different backgrounds and industries. The railway has always offered solid career prospects, but you might be surprised by how diverse our team really is. Our aim is to support and develop our people, whatever their core skill set. It is a dynamic industry, at a very exciting time.

We're committed to attracting and retaining talented people. Our communities are diverse and widespread, and we feel privileged to influence the lives of the UK's biggest rail travel population. It takes a lot of different people to run our railways, from social media to engineering, occupational health to planning and everything in between.

It's an exciting journey, with an industry that has moved on from the Victoria steam era to a time when trains are at the height of emerging global technology.

Customer service

Whether you thrive on the hustle and bustle of a crowd, or prefer a quieter hum, our customer facing roles offer you a wide range of great career options. Our station and train teams are the experts in helping our customers to get where they are going. With a network that spans 157 stations and 2322 daily trains, it takes a lot of teamwork to provide a positive experience for our customers.

We offer a great deal more to our teams than you might expect. We never recruit on zero hour contracts, all of our full-time staff are guaranteed an average of 35 hours per week. We offer great rates of pay and stable shift patterns so that our teams can plan their lives in advance. Free travel for you (and your eligible family members) means that you can get away to the beach, or check out the latest scene in the city, completely on us!

We work hard to ensure that our staff have fantastic opportunities for career progression and on-going training and the ability to become experts on their local routes and communities. We’re proud of the part our teams play in their local communities and the impact that they have on thousands of journeys a day. Take a look at our community pages.

Train drivers

Whether already part of the railway industry, or ready for a brand new challenge, becoming a trainee train driver with Southern, Thameslink, Great Northern or Gatwick Express is a great career choice! Our selection process uses industry standard assessments to find applicants that share our vision and values. We are completely committed to equality, diversity and inclusion across our recruitment and staffing policies, and offer industry-leading packages.

The railway has always offered solid career prospects to hard working people, but you might be surprised by how diverse our team really is. From train cleaners to ex-service people, from nurses to flight crew we’re looking for people from any industry who share our visions and values.

We’re modernising our train service and the way we operate our services for our passengers. As part of the UK’s biggest ever driver training programme, we’re looking for thoughtful, hardworking individuals to join our team of train drivers to help get our passengers get where they want to be safely and on time.

We’re looking for people enthusiasts to drive our trains as our drivers make sure that our passengers are both safe and also well informed. We believe that delivering a high level of customer service is far more important than whether you can name every steam train that we ever operated.

Future talent

As we continue to modernise our train services, infrastructure and working practices, apprentices, graduates and placement students provide a fresh perspective that every organisation needs to thrive. We offer nationally-recognised qualifications for all apprentices and high-level industry qualifications for graduates and placement students. Many of our managers have started their careers with GTR via graduate or apprenticeship roles and we continue to seek out the leaders of tomorrow.

We are very proud of the impact that our four-year engineering apprenticeships have, not only within our teams but also within our local communities. Each year, 10 young people join our engineering functions, learning to service, maintain and prepare our diverse fleet of trains from the ground up.

You may have heard about work experience programmes but ours might not be what you expect! At GTR we recognise the importance of the communities that we operate in and feel that it's important to offer something back. We strongly believe that work experience should be about more than making tea for the office or filing documents and have several exciting programmes which cover everything from driving a train (simulator!) to joining our social media conversations.
