Luggage

Here’s everything you need to know about bringing luggage with you on your Thameslink train journey – including details about bikes on trains, step-free access, and how to get help if you’re a disabled passenger.

Luggage on our trains

You can bring up to 3 pieces of luggage with you on all our trains, provided you can carry it yourself and store it safely. Some items may come with an additional cost, and some items are not allowed on trains.

You’ll need to carry your own luggage, but if you’re disabled or have restricted mobility our Passenger Assist service can support you.

Storing your luggage

Please be considerate of other passengers by keeping aisles, doorways and designated spaces clear throughout your journey.

Where available, larger items should be placed in the luggage racks provided. Smaller bags can be stored in the overhead racks or underneath your seat.

For everyone's safety, luggage must not:

  • block doorways or aisles, as this can cause train delays and safety issues

  • obstruct access to seats or emergency equipment

  • be left in wheelchair spaces, cycle areas or other designated spaces

  • inconvenience other passengers

  • be left unattended at a station or on a train

If the train is particularly busy, you may be asked to reposition your luggage or keep it with you. You may find it helpful to travel with luggage during quieter times.

Travelling with luggage to and from Luton Airport or Gatwick Airport

If you're travelling to or from Luton Airport or Gatwick Airport, please allow extra time to board and leave the train with your luggage, particularly during busy periods.

Please use the dedicated luggage storage areas where available and keep gangways and doors clear so that other passengers can board and alight safely.

Looking after your belongings

You're responsible for your luggage throughout your journey.

Please keep your belongings with you at all times and never leave luggage unattended at stations or on board trains. Unattended items may be treated as suspicious and could be removed or destroyed in line with security procedures.

Before leaving the train, check that you've taken all of your belongings with you.

If you leave something behind, please visit our Lost Property page for information on how to report it.

Step-free access

If you're travelling with heavy luggage, it's worth checking whether your departure and destination stations have step-free access before you travel. Station information pages provide details of lifts, ramps and other accessibility features.
