Train service punctuality and reliability

For information on how the train service is performing

Station by station performance

You can now view periodic (4-weekly) performance data for punctuality and reliability of train services at individual stations. This data includes the percentage of trains arriving at the station within three minutes of their scheduled arrival and the percentage of trains that were scheduled, but did not call at the station.

Performance target future plan

What are we doing about it?

We are working very closely with Network Rail to deliver more punctual and reliable services for passengers and better experiences when travelling. Together, we have a joint performance strategy focused on six key areas: timetables, traincrew, rolling stock, infrastructure, reducing trespass, and keeping customers moving and informed during disruption.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure issues have been a big cause of delay on our route, which is why improving asset reliability remains a key focus. Working with Network Rail, we are investing in new technology and targeted improvements to help identify faults before they affect journeys. This includes fitting thermal imaging cameras and sensors to trains, expanding remote condition monitoring of critical assets, and delivering reliability improvements at locations that have caused significant disruption.

Rolling stock

We continue to work with our fleet partners to improve train reliability and reduce failures that cause delays and cancellations. This includes enhanced monitoring technology, targeted maintenance programmes and upgrades to improve the reliability of our trains and onboard systems.

Traincrew

We are continuing to invest in recruitment, training and attendance management programmes to improve reliability and reduce disruption for customers. Across GTR, this includes increasing driver numbers and improving availability across the network and these plans are already showing benefit.

Reducing trespass and external incidents

Trespass and other external incidents continue to have a significant impact on performance. Working with Network Rail, the British Transport Police and other partners, we are expanding the use of drones and other technology to locate trespassers more quickly and reopen the railway sooner. We are also delivering a joint programme focused on improving incident response, decision-making and recovery when incidents occur.

Timetables

We continuously review our timetables to ensure they are robust, reliable and capable of recovering quickly following disruption. This includes making changes where necessary to improve service resilience and support more reliable journeys for customers.

Keeping customers moving and informed

When disruption does occur, we are focused on improving how we respond and how we communicate with customers. Our joint control teams are working together to improve incident management, recovery and the information customers receive during disruption, helping people make informed decisions about their journeys.

We are committed to continuing to improve our performance and we are working closely with Network Rail to tackle the issues that have the greatest impact on reliability and deliver a railway that is more punctual, resilient and dependable.
