Looking for an outdoor adventure in London?

Beckenham Place Park offers an array of water activities and much more, immediately accessible from Ravensbourne station and just a 10-minute walk from Beckenham Hill station. I spent the perfect day exploring the park.

Here's a glimpse of my experience.

A splash in London’s first purpose-built swimming lake

Beckenham Place Park boasts London’s first purpose-built swimming lake, making it a prime destination for water enthusiasts. Whether you’re into open swimming or paddleboarding, the lake offers a refreshing escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Just be sure to book ahead, as these activities are quite popular, especially in the summer months.

But don’t worry if you can’t make it in the warmer seasons—the lake is open year-round, and hosts annual Christmas and New Year’s Day Swims for the brave-hearted! For an added treat, there is also a mobile sauna available, providing a luxurious way to warm up and relax after a quick dip.

I took advantage of a sunny day in July to enjoy a refreshing swim and a bit of sunbathing, which was incredibly rejuvenating. The cool water and serene environment provided a perfect way to unwind. Because you have to book ahead, there is a cap on how many people are having fun at the lake, which means an atmosphere that’s lively but not too busy.

The lake offers a number of activities aside from swimming. Next on my list is trying out a paddleboard yoga session. I’ve heard it's a fantastic way to combine relaxation and exercise on the tranquil waters of the lake. And talk about improving your balance!

More than just water activities

Beckenham Place Park isn’t just about water activities – it’s also a great place for dog lovers and exploring the woods with kids! The park is home to multiple cafes and restaurants, a rose garden, walking trails, and even a historic mansion.

After my swim, I stopped at the Homestead Café for a coffee and a quick snack. This charming café is attached to a beautiful garden, making it an ideal spot to relax and refuel. On weekends, the café often hosts events with live music or DJs, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. It's the perfect spot to catch up with friends or have a day out with the whole family.

Beckenham Place Park also has events planned throughout the year, including vintage fairs and music events. These events add a lively and diverse range of activities for visitors of all ages to enjoy, making the park an ideal destination no matter the season.

Discovering the mansion

The park’s mansion is a must-visit. Inside, you’ll find a vintage store filled with hidden gems. From clothes and jewellery to furniture and books, the variety is impressive for such a small store. I spent some time marvelling at the eclectic collection and tried on a few items for the fun of it.

The mansion also hosts a kids' sewing camp, live music, and private events, adding to the park’s family-friendly appeal. There truly is something for everyone at Beckenham Place Park.
