Engineering works and changes to train times

Network Rail has a programme of planned engineering work to improve the rail network. This work is usually carried out overnight or at weekends when services are less busy, but it can still mean that we have to make changes to our services. Services are most regularly altered after 10pm on Mondays to Fridays, all day on Saturday and Sunday or around Bank Holidays.

Planned engineering works

Major engineering work at London Bridge affecting Thameslink until January 2018

As part of the government sponsored Thameslink Programme, Network Rail are rebuilding London Bridge mainline rail station to provide more space, improved connections to more destinations and more reliable services. The rail and tube station will remain open during the work.

Until 2018, there will be long and short term changes to train services as major track work takes place around London Bridge station.

Amended late night Thameslink trains from Monday 27 to Thursday 30 March

From 23:00 each night, Network Rail are carrying out engineering work at various locations on the Thameslink network.

Customer Advice:

Trains between Luton and Sutton are diverted between Streatham and Sutton via Mitcham Junction (not stopping) and will run non stop. Customers for stations via Wimbledon should use TfL buses.

Buses will replace trains between Three Bridges and Brighton.

Buses replace trains between Ely and Cambridge on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 April

Network Rail are carrying out engineering work between Ely and Cambridge, closing the line.

Customer Advice:

Buses replace trains between Ely and Cambridge.

CrossCountry will also run buses between Peterborough, March, Ely and Cambridge on Sunday.

On Sunday, East Midlands Trains services will be replaced by buses between Norwich and Peterborough.

No Thameslink services between London Bridge and Brighton on Saturday 1 April

Network Rail are carrying out engineering work between London Bridge and East Croydon, closing some lines.

Thameslink services between London Bridge and Brighton will not run.

Services between Bedford and Brighton will call additionally at Balcombe.

Amended Great Northern service to and from London Kings Cross / Moorgate until 08:15 on Sunday 2 April

Network Rail are carrying out engineering work between Alexandra Palace and Stevenage and also between London Kings Cross and Peterborough, closing some lines.

Until 08:15, the following alterations will apply:

  • Trains from Hertford North towards London will be replaced by buses between Gordon Hill and Finsbury Park.
  • A reduced service will run from London Kings Cross to Hertford North, with some services being replaced by buses between Finsbury Park and Gordon Hill.
  • Buses will replace trains between Finsbury Park and New Barnet
  • Trains from Peterborough towards London will be retimed to leave Peterborough up to 40 minutes earlier than usual

No trains between Denmark Hill and Bromley South on Sunday 2 April

Network Rail are carrying out engineering work between Nunhead and Shortlands, closing the line.

Customer Advice:

No trains will run between Nunhead and Bromley South. Services will be diverted via Herne Hill.

Trains between London Victoria and Dartford will not run.

Buses will run between Herne Hill and Bromley South, calling at Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye, Crofton Park, Catford, Bellingham and Beckenham Hill.

Ticket acceptance:

Customers may use London Bus services between Peckham Rye and Nunhead and also between Beckenham Junction and Ravensbourne.

Southeastern customers may use London Underground services between London Victoria and Embankment / London Charing Cross / Southwark / London Blackfriars / Elephant & Castle.

No trains between Tulse Hill and Wimbledon via Tooting / Sutton via Mitcham Junction on Sunday 2 April

Network Rail are carrying out engineering work between Tulse Hill and Wimbledon via Tooting / Sutton via Mitcham Junction, closing all lines.

Thameslink trains will not run between Tulse Hill and Wimbledon via Tooting / Sutton via Mitcham Junction.

Services that usually run between Luton and Sutton will be amended to run between Luton and Wimbledon via Crystal Palace and West Croydon.

Southern trains are replaced by buses between Tulse Hill and Sutton.

Network Rail are carrying out engineering work between Three Bridges and Haywards Heath (until 07:20) and between Preston Park and Brighton (from 07:20 until the end of service), closing some lines.

Until 07:20, Thameslink services will be replaced by buses between Three Bridges and Brighton.

From 07:20 until the end of service, Thameslink services will be replaced by buses between Haywards Heath and Brighton.

Southern services will run between Haywards Heath and Brighton via Hove.

Buses will replace trains between Brighton and Lewes.

Amended services between Luton and London St Pancras International on Sunday 9 April

Network Rail is carrying out engineering work between Luton and St Pancras International at various locations closing various lines.

Customer Advice:

East Midlands Trains will run to and amended timetable between Luton and St Pancras International. Journey times will be extended by up to 10 minutes.

Some services are also cancelled.

As a result of this engineering work, the 16:24 Nottingham to Derby is retimed.

Thameslink trains until 08:50, buses will replace trains between St Albans and West Hampstead Thameslink.

All day, trains between Luton and Kentish Town will have journey times extended by up to 10 minutes.

Network Rail are carrying out engineering work between Kentish Town and Elephant & Castle, closing all lines.

There will be no Thameslink services will run through Central London.

An amended service will operate as follows:

  • 2 trains per hour will run between London St  Pancras International (East Midland Trains platforms) and Bedford
  • 2 trains per hour will run between London St Pancras International (East Midland Trains platforms) and Luton
  • 2 trains per hour will run between London Bridge and Brighton
  • 2 trains per hour will run between London Bridge and Wimbledon via West Croydon and Sutton
  • 2 trains per hour will run between London Victoria (diverted from London Blackfriars) and Sevenoaks

You may use your tickets on London Buses and London Underground services on any reasonable route.

Buses have been arranged to run between London St Pancras International and London Bridge during the hours that the tube is unavailable.

Network Rail are carrying out engineering work is taking place 00:10 each night between Three Bridges and Haywards Heath, closing some lines.

The 22:52 (Monday - Thursday) Bedford to Brighton service will terminate at Three Bridges. A bus will operate from Three Bridges to Brighton.

The 00:10 (Tuesday - Friday) Brighton to Bedford service will start from Three Bridges. A bus will operate from Brighton to Three Bridges.

These services will not run all day. 1 service an hour which runs between Bedford and Brighton will call additionally at Balcombe. If you intend to travel between these destinations, you should use Thameslink services from London Blackfriars.

The 23:05 and 23:37 services on Saturday, and the 00:10 service on Sunday between Brighton and Bedford will be retimed by up to 17 minutes to arrive later than usual in to Bedford.

Network Rail are carrying out engineering work between Streatham and Wimbledon, closing some lines.

The 21:50, 22:20 and 22:50 Luton to Sutton via Wimbledon services will be amended to run to Wimbledon via Sutton, not calling at Haydons Road or Tooting. If you are travelling to or from these stations you will be able to use London Buses to complete your journey.

Thameslink trains to and from Sutton will operate to and from Wimbledon via Tooting. Customers should use TfL buses between Wimbledon and Sutton and Southern replacement buses between Streatham and Sutton via Mitcham Junction.

Southern replacement buses will run between Streatham and Epsom via Mitcham Junction and also between West Croydon and Sutton.

Trains will not run between Epsom and Dorking, customers should use South West Trains.

Network Rail are carrying out engineering work between London St Pancras International and Loughborough Junction, closing all lines.

Customer advice:

Stations between London St Pancras International and Loughborough Junction will not be served.  An amended timetable will operate as below:

4 trains per hour will run between London St Pancras International and Bedford.

2 trains per hour will run between London St Pancras International and Luton.

4 trains per hour will run between London Bridge and Brighton. If you are travelling to stations via Redhill, you should use Southern services.

2 trains per hour will run between London Bridge and Sutton via Wimbledon. If you are travelling to stations via Mitcham Junction, you should use Southern services.

2 trains per hour will run between London Victoria and Sevenoaks.

You may use your ticket on London Underground services between London St Pancras International and London Bridge.  A rail replacement service will run between these stations when London Underground is closed.

A half hourly Gatwick Express service will operate.

Trains will depart London Victoria on the hour and 30 minutes past the hour.

Trains will depart Gatwick Airport at 20 minutes and 50 minutes past the hour.

Until 09:00 trains from London St Pancras International towards Bedford will have an extended journey time of up to 15 minutes.

The 06:28 and 07:03 Bedford to Brighton service will not run between Bedford and London St Pancras International.

Network Rail are carrying out engineering work between Royston and Cambridge, closing all lines.

Customer Advice:

Network Rail are carrying out engineering work between London St Pancras International and Loughborough Junction, closing all lines.

There will be no service through Central London. Trains will be amended to start / terminate at London St Pancras International / London Victoria / London Bridge. London Blackfriars will not be served.

An amended timetable will operate as follows:

  • Between London Bridge and Brighton. Passengers for stations via Redhill should use Southern services
  • Between London St Pancras International and Luton / Bedford
  • Between London Victoria and Sevenoaks. (On Sunday buses will operate between Otford and Sevenoaks.
  • There will be no services to Sutton. Passengers should use Southern services for Sutton and stations via Mitcham Junction, and London Buses for stations via Wimbledon

 

Alternative Travel Options:

Passengers may use London Underground via any reasonable route. Passengers can also use Night Tube and Night Buses via any reasonable route.

Advice for Southern customers:

A reduced service will run between London Victoria and Brighton.

A replacement bus will run between Tonbridge and Redhill and between Purley and Redhill / Horley.

Advice for Thameslink customers:

On Saturday, the 23:10 and 23:40 Bedford to Three Bridges services will depart East Croydon later than normal, arriving into Three Bridges approximately 19 minutes later than scheduled.

Trains from London Bridge to Brighton will not call at Balcombe, but trains from Bedford to Brighton will call additionally at Balcombe.

Services between Bedford and Three Bridges will run non-stop between Purley and Gatwick Airport. A replacement bus will run between Purley and Gatwick Airport via Redhill.

On Sunday, a revised service will run between London Bridge and Brighton.
